Amphipolis is best known for its magnificent ancient city (polis) whose impressive remains can still be seen. It is famous for the greatest battle between the Spartans and the Athenians (422 BC) and as the place where Alexander the Great prepared his invasion to Asia. The local excavations have revealed several structures, ancient walls and the famous Amphipolis Tomb.
Philippi was an important city that flourished in the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine Periods. Site of the famous “Battle of Philippi” that put an end to the Roman Republic and a landmark of early Christianity after St.Paul’s visit. Today the archaeological site showcases a few substantial remains including a theatre and four basilicas.
