Akrotiri is Santorini’s Minoan Bronze Age archaeological settlement referred to as the “Prehistoric Pompei” which was destroyed in the volcanic eruption around 1620 BC. A number of its artworks, objects, fine frescoes and other remains are preserved in perfect condition due to the volcanic ash that covered it entirely upon the eruption until it was discovered in the mid 60’s. Visitors can enjoy a private visit to the unique excavation itself or visit the prehistoric museum in Fira, which houses many of the Akrotiri treasures.
